Around Tha Phae there are quite a few guesthouses and 2-3 star hotels. This area is also very popular among foreigners for it's nightlife.

Along the River you'll find more exquisite hotels, with higher star ratings, but also some of the boutique style hotels and guesthouses. Here the prices are quite high, as a location on the river is highly desired.

On the outskirts of Chiang Mai there are more hotels and guesthouses generally going down in price the further you get away from the city. That's ok, because public transportation is abundant, and very affordable.

A bit of Insider Information: All this political turmoil and instability is only causing the prices of hotels to drop. Many tourists are scared that something might happen, but it's very safe, especially in Chiang Mai.
